How Virginia Tech recalculates GPA for admission
Virginia Tech reviews both weighted and unweighted GPA. The number you submit on your transcript and the number VT uses in its admission decision may differ. Use the calculator above to model both — switch the preset to match Virginia Tech's policy.
Maintaining a good VT GPA
- Engineering pathway through General Engineering. Not all freshmen direct-admit to a specific engineering major — many start in General Engineering and apply to a discipline after freshman year with 3.0+ in math/physics prereqs. Computer Science, BME, and Aerospace are the most selective transfers.
- Pamplin Honors needs 3.7+ unweighted. Pamplin direct admit requires strong test scores and GPA. The Pamplin Honors track requires 3.7+ unweighted plus an essay.
- Corps of Cadets is a parallel admission track. VT's Corps of Cadets has its own application process and admit profile — students can use the Corps as a pathway to ROTC and military commissioning. Corps students live and train together separately from the general student body.
