How UC San Diego recalculates GPA for admission
UC uses a capped weighted GPA on grades earned in approved A-G courses from 10th and 11th grade only. Weighting is +1.0 for UC-honors-approved, AP, and IB classes up to a cap of 8 semesters. The number you submit on your transcript and the number UCSD uses in its admission decision may differ. Use the calculator above to model both — switch the preset to match UC San Diego's policy.
Maintaining a good UCSD GPA
- The 8-semester cap on weighted bonus is binding. If you took 14 weighted classes across 10th-11th, only 8 semesters of +1.0 boost apply. Plan your AP/honors load with this cap in mind — overloading past 8 semesters doesn't help your UC GPA.
- Provost's Honors lists at 3.5+ each term. 3.5+ on at least 12 graded UCSD units per term puts you on Provost's Honors. The honor is reported on transcripts but doesn't otherwise affect degree honors (those use cumulative GPA only).
- Engineering and CS direct admit are the most selective. The Jacobs School of Engineering caps freshman admission by capacity. Computer Science and Bioengineering are the two most competitive — typical admits clear 4.3 UC-weighted GPA plus 1500+ SAT.
